While many Texans’ thoughts turn to football in the fall, the boys and girls cross country teams “kicked off” their seasons with an unscored dual meet against Logo Prep on August 12.
The meet was held at Sugar Land Memorial Park with all athletes racing over a course slightly longer than four-kilometers on a very warm and humid morning.
Junior Stephen Slage led the way for the boy’s team, with a runner-up finish in sixteen minutes and 16 seconds. Three more Cougs followed him across the line as senior Matthew Anderson (16:42), junior Francis Ogbonna (17:07) and freshman Brandon Phegley (17:47) scored top 10 finishes. Junior Mohammed Abu-Rezeq (17:56) rounded out what would have been the team’s five scoring athletes.
Logos’ Garrett Goolsby was the overall winner of the race in 15:30.
The girls team was led by underclassmen Mariela Hernandez, a freshman who toured the course in 22:04, and sophomore Terri Hayes (23:14).
Both teams next action will be at the Run the Ridge XC Meet, hosted by Cy-Ridge High School, on August 26.
