Multiple Teams · Kempner Cross Country faces stiff challenge at Cougar Classic


The Cougar harriers competed in their home meet on September 28, while facing a very deep and competitive group of teams from all over the Houston – Galveston area.  The course, at Imperial Park, provided the runners with a mixture of detailed trails and long rolling stretches of course what were prime areas for overtaking opponents.

Some of the squads that traveled to Sugar Land on this Thursday, included Stratford, Cypress Woods, Cypress Falls, Galveston Ball, as well as all of the FBISD cross country teams.  There were over 1000 runners in 6 races over the course of the one day event.

The varsity boys were led once again by Brandon Phegley and Matthew Anderson.  Phegley covered the 5K (3.1-mile) course, that also included multiple water crossings, in 19 minutes and 12 seconds.  That was good for 60th place overall (57th in the team scoring), while Anderson crossed the line in 108th (100th in team scoring) with a time of 20:21

The remaining scoring members were Jason Granados (162th 23:00.17), Stephen Slage (165th 23:03.27), Mohammed R. Abu-Rezeq (167th 23:40.46),  The non Points Finishers included: Cesar Hernandez (169th 23:55.78) and Jonah Luke (171th 24:05.58)

The varsity boys finished 27st overall in the team scoring Varsity race, which was won by Cypress Woods.  Edward Njuguna  of Travis was the individual winner over Ricardo Banks of Cy Falls by 1 second 16:51 to 16:52.

The JV Boys Placed 25th and were led by a solid effort from Francis Ogbonna (39th 23:20.74)

Iman Ahmed (18th 11:24.55) continued her season as the top female runner for the Lady Cougar squad, She and  Mariela Hernandez (36th 11:52.10) both ran a solid race and placed in the top 40 on the single loop of the course today. Hellen Wu,Dua Sayeed, and Karla Avila completed the scoring for the girls who ended up 7th place.  Terri Hayes, Amy Romero, and Emilie Hammons all competed and made strong showings on the circuit.
