After starting out the season with 3 tough losses to quality opponents, the Kempner Cougars football team started to find their identity on Friday night against the Austin Bulldogs. Having to replace all district level performers at multiple positions, including Quarterback, Running Back and Tight end/Reciever, the Cougars have had some growing pains in their first three games.
This week however the results of all of the hard work that Coach Andrus and his staff have put in working with this team and the strength of the returning starters started to show itself on the field. In what was the best offensive performance of the season the Cougars put 42 points on the board to out last the Bulldogs and their spread offense 42-35.
New quarterback Cade Lubojasky, who has stepped in for Alex Carr had a solid performance under center. Lubojasky was 2-4 for 90 yards and 2 touchdowns passing, while adding another 46 yards on the ground. Replacing an all district athlete like Billy Regans Jr is a challenge for anyone, however Coach Andrus has found a group of backs who are stepping up to the challenge. Included in that group of backs are Joel Adams who accounted for 124 yards on 10 carries and 3 rushing touchdowns as well as a 46 yard touchdown reception as well. Helping Adams carry the load for the Cougars was Jordan Shelton with 10 carries for an additional 53 yards. Overall the offense accounted for 360 yards 11 first downs and only one turnover.
The defensive side of the ball was challenged by Austin QB Trey Larson and his 31 pass attempts and a combined 43 rushing attempts by multiple Austin running backs. The Cougars held the Bulldog Rushing attack to less than 3 yards per carry and forced 3 fumbles and recovered 2 of them. Larson only completed 35% of his passes and had one intercepted. Other than 2 long touchdown the Bulldog QB was forced into looking underneath the coverage.
Congratulations to the Cougars on getting their first win of the season and we are looking forward to hearing whom the coaching staff named as players of the game. Look for that announcement on this site early next week.
