Cougars News · Cheerleading, Not Just for Girls

Did you know that tough guy Samuel L Jackson was a cheerleader? Oh yes! He studied at all male school Morehouse College in Atlanta. He tried out for the cheer squad as a way to meet girls. Turned out he enjoyed the travelling to football and basketball games with fellow students and being the man in charge of the crowd. He ended up meeting his wife at Spelman College as a result of his cheerleading days.

Other famous male cheerleaders include 4 US Presidents. Pres. George W Bush was head cheerleader at Phillips Academy High School. Pres. Ronald Reagan was not only a basketball cheerleader, but played on the Varsity team. Pres Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower were also college cheerleaders.

Cheerleading began as a male sport in 1877 at Princeton University. Women didn’t join the sport until 30 years later in 1907.

This year  Daeron Brodie has made quite an impression on and off the field. Daeron has been a competitive cheerleader for 6 years and the team was ecstatic to have him as part of the KHS Varstity squad. From the moment he became part of the team, his popularity was off the charts. At cheer camp he was an instant celebrity with his outstanding toe touch and natural physical abilities. He was chosen as an All American Cheerleader at camp along with fellow Varsity cheerleader Morgan McVey. The Homecoming Cheer Beau brought strength and talent to the team. Daeron will leave some big shoes to fill as he graduates this year. He plans to attend Blinn this fall and tryout for their cheer squad. We know he will be a great success in life as he in great company among successful men that began as cheerleaders. President Daeron… I like the sound of that!

Who will be our next male cheerleader(s)? Are you up to the challenge?

Cheer tryouts will be held March 7. For more information see Coach Tielke in Room 209
