Boys Sophomore Baseball · Sophomore baseball ends tournament on sour note

The sophomore baseball team finished the Foster Tournament with a 1-3 mark after a 16-3 shellacking from Katy Taylor on March 10.

The game was a rematch from just seven days earlier, where the Cougars turned back the Mustangs 9-7.  The Taylor squad, however, made certain that there would be no victory celebration for the Cougs, jumping on Kempner starter Logan Urreiztieta for four runs in the top half of the first frame.

Kempner put together a bit of a two-out rally in the bottom of the first, as Brandon Phegley and Alejandro Garcia both reached, but the inning fizzled out without any scoring.

For all intents and purposes, Taylor put the game away in the second inning as 15 Mustangs batted and 12 of them scored.

Once again, shaky defense played a major part in the Cougars undoing as the team combined for six errors in the first two innings – forcing the pitching staff to record far more than the normal three outs to end an inning.

To their credit, the team did rally in the bottom of the frame as four of the first five hitters reached base.  Highlighting the offense was a sharp RBI double by Beau Robertson that put Kempner on the board on their way to a three-run inning.

Urreiztieta suffered the loss on the mound, and the team’s record drops to 2-8.

The team returns home on Monday to face Ridge Point – first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
