The summer conditioning program for the 2018 Kempner cross country team is well underway as a group of several dozen runners have been meeting nearly every morning to workout ahead of the blistering summer heat.
Both the boys and girls teams feature a good mix of experienced, returning runners and newcomers, with head coach Angela Pierce expecting big things from both squads.
“I’ve already seen improvements from a number of runners,” Pierce said of the group workouts that are in their second week. “Consistency is the key in distance running – you won’t necessarily notice an improvement day-to-day, but it shows up over time.”
The competitive season will officially kick off on August 11 when the team travels to the Cypress Relays.
Both squads will look to improve upon sixth-place finishes at the district meet, while increasing the number of runners qualifying for regionals. In 2017, two Cougars earned a spot on the starting line at the Region III meet.
Any students interested in trying out for the teams may contact Coach Pierce at email@example.com for additional details. Pre-participation paperwork must be on file and approved prior to participating in any workouts.
