Multiple Teams · Cross Country announces season schedule

Head coach Angela Pierce announced the Cougar cross country team’s season schedule, which kicks off at the Cypress XC Relays on August 11 at Spring Creek Park in Tomball.

“I’m very excited about the upcoming season,” Pierce said.  “We have a very solid nucleus of returning runners and are adding several quality newcomers to round out the squad.

“There are also some promising freshman that should develop this fall while adjusting to high school cross country.”

The season-opening meet has a unique format as the squad will compete as two-person relay teams, with each runner completing a total of two miles – alternating efforts over the one-mile route.  Individual relay winners will be determined by order of finish while the team crown will be awarded to the school with the fastest combined time of its top three relays in each division.

The relay format provides a change to the normal 5K race distance and serves as a nice “rust-buster” for the first meet.

Standard cross country meets at the UIL 6A level have runners competing over a 5K (3.1-mile) course.  Varsity teams may enter up to seven runners, with the top five finishers counting in the team score.  A runner’s overall finishing position is his/her score (i.e. 1st place is one point, 2nd place is two points, etc.).  The team score is calculated by totaling up the finishing places of a team’s top five finishers, with the lowest score winning.  The sixth and seventh runners do not factor in their team’s score, but they can increase other teams’ scores by finishing ahead of their competitors’ top five runners.

The Cougars will spend many of their weekends on the north and west side of Houston, racing four times in the Cypress area and once each in Katy and Brenham.  They will also make one jaunt to the south to compete in Galveston and, of course, will host their own meet at Imperial Park in late September.

“We have upgraded our schedule this year to challenge our runners while also preparing them for the competitive atmosphere that they will face at the District 20-6A meet and the Region III championships,” said Pierce.
