The Kempner cross country teams made the trek to Cypress on August 25 to compete in the Cy-Ridge Invitational. The teams were competing a bit short-handed, as a number of runners – particularly on the varsity level – were missing due to SAT exams.
This kept a couple of the teams from posting team scores, as a team must have five runners finish a race to compile a team score. But there were a number of individual highlights, including a slew of runners that improved their times from the meet one week prior.
Leading the way was Ajay Sugfgunan, who clipped a whopping two minutes and six seconds from his two-mile time in just one week. Following him was Michael Cheng, whose 16:00 clocking was a full 1:17 faster than his previous race.
While those two were the only runners to drop more than 60 seconds from race to race, there were a number of other impressive improvements of more than half-a-minute:
Terri Hayes: from 17:52 to 16:59 (-53)
Helen Wu: 15:32 to 14:52 (-40)
Zoya Alvi: 16:21 to 15:42(-39)
Valeria Garza: 18:35 to 17:58 (-37)
Kayla Nguyen: 17:02 to 16:27 (-35)
Sofia Siddigui: 16:53 to 16:20 (-33)
Jacquelyn Colchado: 15:54 to 15:21 (-33)
The varsity, JV, and freshman teams will travel to Katy for the Seven Lakes Invitational on Saturday, September 1. The first race, varsity boys, will kick off at 7:30 a.m. with a rolling schedule of races to follow.
The varsity teams will get their first opportunity to race the championship distance of 5K, as will the JV boys. The JV girls and freshman races will be contested over the 3200 meter distance.
